The Sky's the Limit

online literary journal Sky Island set to drop first issue

Max Martinson |

Sky Island Journal is an Eau Claire-based online literary journal that was started by two men, Jason Splichal and Jeff Sommerfield. Jeff and Jason sought a way to create a reader and contributor friendly magazine that challenged the reader intellectually and moved them emotionally. The two men operate the entire organization themselves, as well as judging all of the submissions – their website reads, “we know quality work when we experience it.” They read all of the work anonymously, without cover letters, names, or any other personal information; If the work is good, they will publish it. They publish poems, creative nonfiction, and flash fiction. Additionally, while most online magazines take nearly three months to respond to writers who submit work, Sky Island Journal has an average response time of seven days, so this is a unique opportunity for writers. On July 22, the guys will be dropping the first issue on their website, skyislandjournal.com. This will be the first of many issues from the magazine. Sky Island will be published quarterly, releasing one issue per season. When it comes to the content, the guys say simply to send them your best work – about anything, from anywhere – and they’ll take it from there.
