“My hands are always busy, so busy, so when I purchased a collection of unloved family portraits, lots of them, at an estate sale, I wondered what my hands would do with them. Thinking about what the lives in these portraits may have been like, I decided that whatever I imagined, it could not compare to their actual physical and emotional lives. My paintings, visually based on these family photos, might say something about my own life, but probably not much, to nothing, in terms of accuracy about the subjects. The photographs are a springboard for my current work. This painting, ‘A Sultry Gathering,’ is one in my ‘Family of the Absurd’ series.” – The Artist
