What is the Minneapolis Sound? How did it come to be? Author, radio host, and music journalist Andrea Swensson explores these questions in her book, Got to be Something Here: The Rise of the Minneapolis Sound. This award-winning journalistic account begins in 1958, the year of Prince’s birth, and follows R&B and soul through two generations of evolution. It explores the struggle of black artists to find venues for performances and succeed in the music business and recalls the impact of artists such as the Exciters and the Amazers on communities that were being replaced by interstate infrastructure. Dotters Books will host Swensson June 23 at Kgam Studio, 515 Wisconsin St., for a night of reading, discussion, and live jazz by the Josh Gallagher Trio. For anyone angling for a signature, Got to be Something Here is available through the Dotters Books website for pick up at the event.
