A university administrator from Washington State has been chosen to become the new chancellor of UW-Stout early next year.

Dr. Katherine Frank was unanimously approved as the eighth chancellor – and first female leader – in the university’s history by the UW System Board of Regents on Nov. 26. Frank is currently vice president of academic innovation and a professor of English at Central Washington University in Ellensburg, Washington. In early November, she was one of four finalists considered as replacements for former Chancellor Bob Meyer, who retired in August.

Frank, who will begin her new job on March 1, said she was “delighted” to be hired. “Throughout the search process, I became increasingly impressed by the high-quality work and creative thinking exhibited by faculty, staff, and students at UW-Stout, as well as the strong, reciprocal relationships among the university, community, and regional partners,” Frank said in a press release. “Everyone demonstrated dedication to the university and exhibited true focus on ensuring student success. As beautifully stated by one alumna, ‘Stout is where you need to be.’ I could not agree more and am honored to join this exceptional community of educators, learners, partners, and friends.”

In addition to her roles at Central Washington, Frank previously held academic and administrative posts at Northern Kentucky University, Indiana University East, and Colorado State University-Pueblo. She holds a Ph.D. and a master’s degree in English from the University of Washington and a bachelor’s degree in English from Bates College in Maine. Frank will earn a salary of $260,000 as chancellor.
