An Evening With Sam Amidon

May 18th at the Masonic Temple

Sam Amidon

Starting May 5, Sam Amidon will be touring the world performing his music, and one of those stops is in Eau Claire. After performing in Finland, Ireland, the UK, and Canada, Sam will be stopping at the Masonic Temple (616 Graham Ave., Eau Claire) on May 18 for a night of good energy and great music.

“Amidon’s self-titled record continues his polyglot blending of folk, classical, and jazz, drawing a resounding personal statement out of songs in the public domain.”

His latest release was his self-titled seventh album, which delivers his same energetic folk tunes in a unique package of blended sounds. Performed with Ruth Goller (bass), Bert Cools (guitar), and Sam Gendel (saxophone), the album totals nine songs, each with its own distinct melody.

“On my previous albums I feel the elements of the music were juxtaposed next to each other: my folksong arrangements up against Nico Muhly’s orchestrations, or my music encountering Milford Graves’ percussion,” Amidon said in a biography written by Allison Hussey. “On this album, I feel like all the elements are more integrated: song form & stories, improvisation, band collectivity, and the history of my own life in traditional music and beyond.”

Most of the album was recorded live within a three-day span in London during the pandemic, so some musicians were layered over the live sound. And while the album is incredible to listen to while streaming, the Chippewa Valley is fortunate enough to have a chance to hear it live themselves on May 18.

Tickets to Amidon’s show are $24 in advance and $26 at the door and can be purchased at VolumeOneTickets.org.
