Fate is a concept thousands of people contemplate in their day-to-day lives, putting faith in the idea that the future is already set. What if you could just play a game to look into what your future holds?

James Peters, an author and email marketing strategist, has released his third book, Fortune Falls, which illuminates main character Jason Lahey’s downward spiral and slow crawl back as he is forced to confront his past. Lahey comes across a slot machine in the middle of a field that delivers a startling prediction for his future, unraveling his life as he knows it.

Fortune Falls is Peters’ third stand-alone novel in a three-part thematic trilogy about acceptance and perseverance. The first two novels in the series are titled Shrugging and Turntable. After ending his music career and re-entering the workplace in Chippewa Valley, Peters did a small run of his first two novels and rediscovered his passion for writing. Peters is currently working on his fourth novel, the title yet to be revealed.

Starting this book in 2008, Peters focused on creating a concept to carry the theme of the novel forward. He came up with a predictive slot machine and the story started from there.

“I like big subjects. I like taking a big bite and chewing long and slow on big topics we all face,” Peters said. “As I was getting older, mortality seemed like a subject that was universal – we all face – and yet we do seem to live in complete ignorance of its inevitability.”

Fortune Falls is now available on Amazon in hardcover, paperback, and Kindle. Readers can meet Peters at his book signing event at 6:30pm on Thursday, March 14, at The Local Store.
