Puck Off!

You should know that you don't have to be a hockey fan to enjoy an afternoon at Hobbs Ice Center watching the Blugold Women's Hockey team. I know very little about hockey and wouldn't watch a game on TV if you paid me, but have found that I can really enjoy the excitement of live hockey. On Saturday afternoon the Blugold Women faced off against the seventh-ranked Stevens Point Pointers. They were fresh off a Friday night victory against the same team and on a four game winning streak. Blugold Sophmore Kristin Faber got things rolling early with a goal in the first five minutes. Goals are exciting, but so is the action in between. It's fast-paced and you are sitting so close to the ice that you can almost feel it when the players come slamming into the boards. That being said, it is important to note that checking is illegal in women's hockey and the only time the gloves came off was at the end of the period. If you are looking for a knock-down, drag-out NHL style, you won't find it here. Just good hockey. Added amusement was provided by the two guys in the announcer's booth running the music. During any short break in the action they would cue up some traditional sports music, Rock and Roll Pt. II, Shout, and even a little Cotton-Eyed Joe. Then they would.....dance. Dance their a**es off.  Seriously. Their enthusiasm was contagious.  Throw in the group of ten-year-olds singing and swaying to Sweet Caroline and you have a great afternoon of entertainment. Four bucks will buy you a few hours of hometown good times. Friendly tip: bring something to sit on. While the temperature inside Hobbs is liveable, man do those benches get cold. Oh, I suppose I should mention that on this Saturday afternoon the Blugold Women skated to a 2-2 tie. Yes, a tie. Ties kinda suck, but that is a subject for another day.
