Eating at the Farm

new airport restaurant goes for Dairyland vibe

Make your next destination The Farm On Starr Restaurant & Bar, 3800 Starr Ave., inside the Chippewa Valley Regional Airport. Glen and Sarah Hein, who also own the well-respected Black Tie Catering in Menomonie, leased what was formerly Connell’s II at the Airport in January. After eight weeks of a total gut and renovation, the establishment has been turned into a Wisconsin dairy farm kitsch-themed restaurant and bar for everyone: singles, couples, families, and groups of 20 to 80 people for group meetings and special occasions. The idea for the theme came from Sarah, whose family traveled to her grandma’s farm in Elk Mound every Sunday. Pint Mason jar glasses, chair backs adorned with a sun and raindrops, framed seed bags, and replicas of antique farm signs complement the theme.

The menu is all-American and all-Wisconsin, with a full breakfast menu, appetizers (cheese curds on the way), soups, salads, wraps, steaks, seafood, plus an all-you-can-eat Friday fish fry for just $9.99 as well as an all-you-can-eat salad bar for $5.95 Monday through Friday 11am to 2pm.

Aside from the regular beer brands and mixed drinks, the bar features (appropriately enough) Farmer’s Daughter, a blonde beer from Menomonie’s Lucette Brewing Co. The bar was packed on its opening night April 1 with the regulars from the old Connell’s II who just had to check out the new place. Judging by their experience, they will be back. My order of the turkey wrap and a cup of chicken wild rice soup cost a little over $5 with a $2 tip for the exceptional customer service from Amber. The gorgeous view of the sunset was an unexpected surprise. Good food, reasonably priced, with top-notch customer service. Parking free under two hours. That’s the Farm on Starr. And the sunset ain’t bad either.
