Going for Gold

Barbara Arnold

There’s gold in them thar hills” – and rivers and streams. Learn how to pan for gold at the Prospecting for Gold class Saturday, June 1, from 9:30 to 11:30am at the Wise Nature Center of the Beaver Creek Reserve near Fall Creek. Mike Wiersma, president of the local chapter of the Gold Prospectors Association of America, will teach the basics of panning for gold as well as prospecting ethics and rules. The class also will pan for gold at an area stream. Equipment will be provided, but you’ll need to bring your own waders or water shoes. The goal: “May you always find yellow in your pan,” Mike quipped. The Registration deadline is May 29. Payment is due at registration and can be made online at www.beavercreekreserve.org. The cost for members of Friends of Beaver Creek Reserve is $5/adult, $3/child, $15/family; for nonmembers, costs are $8/adult, $4/child, and $20/family.
