In the garden
chives are live again

in the pines
goldfinches are noisy
and flash across the lawn

on the wires
mourning doves
sound like owls

at the edge of the birdbath
catbirds drink then fly
away to hide in the mock orange

over the Olsen’s roof
the moon rises
while over the Green’s
the sun sets

behind Gierloff’s on the playground
the killdeer, finally, silent,
drops to her nest
in the sandy dust

under the blanket
I smooth the sheet
and under the sheet
you take my hand
