On May 1, more than 3,800 runners will take to the streets for the eighth annual Eau Claire Marathon. It has been three years since marathon organizers Pat Toutant and his daughter Emi took over the marathon, during which it has grown from 1,200 participants to more than 3,200. “My daughter Emi and I share a passion for making the race a success,” he said. “We want to provide a beautiful, high-quality, well-run, fun venue that will attract runners at all levels and, in turn, will provide revenues to be directed toward various charities and causes.” Fifty-five charities will benefit from this year’s race, a great majority of those local. “I want to help charities that get involved, teaching kids involvement in community,” Pat stated. The races start and finish in Carson Park and include a full marathon and a full relay marathon (both of which are sold out), as well as a half marathon and a 5K. Changes have been made to the course, which now includes running across the High Bridge over the Chippewa River downtown as well as through the UW-Eau Claire campus. Also new this year: A downloadable app that can track up to 25 runners, buses for relay runners, and several high school bands lining Water Street. After the race, you can enjoy festivities in Carson Park until 2pm, then head down to Water Street where, from 2-6pm, you can continue the celebration with Visit Eau Claire, bands, and DJs. Not a runner? Not a problem! There are volunteer opportunities available, or you can join the other 15,000 spectators to cheer on runners all along the course or at the finish line.
