Love the Earth? You’ll Love These Awards

If you know of a person, business, or group that embodies the slogan “Earth Day is Every Day,” consider nominating them for a Sustainable Eau Claire Award. Now in their fourth year, the awards honor those in our community who are planting the seeds of a greener future. The city’s Sustainability Advisory Committee gives out awards in categories that include Clean-up or Beautification; Energy (Renewables, Efficiency, or Conservation); Environment Education; Exceptional Natural Resources Steward; Green Building Design; Green Products or Practices; Local, Sustainable, Healthy Food; Transportation Innovations; Waste Reduction, Composting, or Recycling; Water Quality or Water Conservation; and Student Leadership in Sustainability. According to a city press release, in addition to honoring the winners, “The awards are also meant to encourage residents, businesses, community groups, and others to implement similar actions.” This year a special emphasis will be placed on renewable energy, cutting greenhouse gases, and reducing air pollution. Applications are due Tuesday, May 4, by 5pm, and the awards will be officially handed out on Wednesday, June 5 (which just happens to be World Environment Day). To learn more about the program and to find an application, go to www.eauclairewi.gov and put “Sustainable Eau Claire Awards” in the search bar.
