“Five Thirty Possible” by Andy Schansberg
2017, pencil, enamel, screen print ink on paper, textile, wood, 11” x 14”

Andy Schansberg is a Los Angeles-based artist who was born and raised in Eau Claire. His studio practice spans various media including audio and visual recordings with painting at the forefront.

“Recently I’ve been experimenting with materials and various approaches to painting. Most of my paintings mix the vocabulary of abstraction with graphic forms and patterns. This particular piece is built on a happenstance woven textile grid work and is both serious and playful. I find the idea of framing having a built in sculptural aspect to be interesting. Making openings on the surface and exposing the beauty of a natural woodgrain backing that might otherwise be unappreciated gives the viewer a ‘peek behind the curtain’ and introduces an additional depth and physicality. The simple notion of an expanded layered image creates for new ways to view the painting as an object.” – The Artist
