A UW-Eau Claire professor and a member of the Eau Claire City Council are among those named to a list of the most notable Latinos in the state. The list, titled “Sí Se Puede 2019: Wisconsin’s Most Powerful Latinos,” was recently published by online magazine Madison365. Among the 34 notable Latina and Latino Wisconsinites are City Councilmember Catherine Emmanuelle and Gerardo Licón, a UWEC assistant professor of history and Latin American studies.

The list noted that Emmanuelle was the first Latina/Latino member of the Eau Claire City Council, has been named a Wisconsin Outstanding Women of Color in Education and an Outstanding Recent Alumnus by UWEC, and received national attention because of controversy about breastfeeding her son during council meetings. Licon was cited for his scholarship about the 1943 “Zoot Suit Riots” in California and what lessons they provide about current anti-Latino sentiment, as well as his role in the local Latino community through leadership of the nonprofit El Centro de Conexion de Chippewa Valley.
