North Side Site Rezoned for 500+ Apartments

The Eau Claire City Council has rezoned a 108-acre parcel on Eau Claire’s northwest side, clearing the way for a Wausau-area firm to develop more than 570 apartment units there. The proposed development is west of Kane Road and south of the North Crossing (across the highway from the Menards Corporate Center).

The area had been zoned for one- and two-family homes, but developer S.C. Swiderski of Mosinee sought city approval to rezone it to for low-rise multiple family housing. According to documents submitted to the city, the plan calls for multiple four-, six-, eight-, 16-, and 20-unit apartment buildings plus two duplexes or twin homes.

Now that both the Plan Commission and City Council have OK’d the rezoning, S.C. Swiderski is free to proceed with planning the project. In early 2017, the Plan Commission had rejected a prior proposal by the same developer to build 12 three-story apartment buildings on the site, which many neighbors criticized as too large and dense for the area.
