Joyce Cox begins by envisioning the scene she wants to bring into the world. A wood duck. On the water. The environment: rocks and reeds. A deer. She places each element in her canvas carefully, accentuating the space rather than filling it. Once she has a clear vision of what she will create, she begins her work.

Cox will show her work at the Volume One Gallery (205 N. Dewey St., Eau Claire) Jan. 31-April 26 with a selection of works titled Burning the Canvas at Both Ends. The series emphasizes her most preferred medium, wood burning with paint-wash. Her work is influenced by her love of nature, and enhanced by the natural grain of her canvas, the swirls and whorls of wood showing through the muted hues she chooses.

Though Cox enjoyed attaining a minor in art during her university years, she only recently began making art again after her corporate career kept her too busy for years. “I am beyond happy and grateful to be doing artwork again,” Cox said, citing her work as a great way to de-stress. A reception for Burning the Canvas at Both Ends will be held at the Volume One Gallery on Jan. 31 from 6:30-8:30pm.
