Love ’em or hate ’em – and, boy, do people have opinions about these things! – roundabouts are a fact of life for drivers in Eau Claire.

If you’re one of those drivers who hates these circular traffic features, we’ve got some good news: The roundabout at Rudolph Road and Golf Road will be out of commission beginning Monday, Aug. 10.

We’ve got some bad news, too: The roundabout isn’t going away permanently. Rather, it will be closed for repairs, which are expected to be completed by Tuesday, Aug. 18 – which means drivers will be back to roundabouting in no time. The City of Eau Claire Engineering Department says concrete curb and gutter will be removed and replaced and concrete medians will be repaired.

Unsurprisingly, shutting down the busy intersection will require a detour:

  • Westbound Golf Road traffic will be detoured north on Fairfax Street to Mitscher Avenue; then west on Mitscher Avenue to Rudolph Road; then north on Rudolph Road to E. Hamilton Avenue; then west on E. Hamilton Avenue to State Street; then south on State Street to Lowes Creek Road.
  • Eastbound Golf Road traffic will be detoured beginning on Lowes Creek Road at State Street; then north on State Street to E. Hamilton Avenue; then east on E. Hamilton Avenue to Rudolph Road; then south on Rudolph Road to Mitscher Avenue; then east on Mitscher Avenue to Fairfax Street; then south on Fairfax Street to Golf Road.

According to the Engineering Department, “The detour will include a ‘4-way’ stop sign at the intersection of Rudolph Road and Mitscher Avenue. Motorists can expect delays and congestion at this intersection. Drivers are encouraged to take alternate routes during the construction.”

Here’s a map of the detour route, if you want to know which parts of the south side you’ll soon be exploring:
