Nervous Pets? Ease their thunderstorm anxiety

Dr. Todd Leavitt |

Fall thunderstorms can be a major source of stress for our furry companions. Signs that your pet may be anxious include panting, trembling, pacing or difficulty finding a place to settle, hiding, destructive behavior, or trying to get as close to you as possible. If you think your four-legged friend has thunderstorm anxiety, observe the following tips:

• Have your pet see a veterinarian to ensure there are no underlying health issues with similar symptoms.

• Do not yell at or punish your pet, this will only increase anxiety.

• Allow your pet to hide in a quiet basement, preferably with a noisy fan or TV to drown out the storm sounds.

• Over the counter anxiety aids include the Thundershirt, Adaptil, and herbal remedies (Rescue Remedy or hops, chamomile, and tryptophan).

• Do not give your pet any human medications without consulting a veterinarian. Your vet may be able to prescribe anti-anxiety medications in severe cases.

• Some dog trainers and animal behaviorists can help you desensitize your pet to storms and other anxiety sources.
