Experience the healing power of art in the latest exhibit at Galaudet Gallery. “The New Medicine,” a juried show of 40 pieces by 10 artists from around the world opens Saturday, June 18. Jurors chose from among 200 pieces of art submitted for the show. “We’re continuing our Year of the Rebel theme by pushing the boundaries of what ‘medicine’ means and could mean,” said Vicki Milewski, the gallery’s co-owner. “It was refreshing to see the judges chose pieces that speak to a new reality for medicine that only artists acting like shamans can propose.” Highlights include “Skin and Bone #5,” an oil paining by London artist Emma Connolly that finds beauty in the muscles, veins, and sinews found on medical diagrams; the colorful and infinitely intricate pen-and-pencil drawing “Stars Pour Into My Heart,” by Yuri Hyun; as well as “Multiple Levels,” a work in which Milewski colorizes and enhances an illustration by turn-of-the-last-century master architect Louis Sullivan. In addition to the artistic enjoyment, the opening day features three simultaneous events: from 1-5pm, Xin Obaid will lead a Chinese tea ceremony and will discuss the history, production, and medicinal use of tea; from 2-6pm Mike Milewski, Vicki’s brother and co-owner, will lead a Native American prayer tie ceremony; and from 3-7pm Vicki Milewski will lead a prayer flag ceremony. (Additional events are planned on July 30-31, too.) All events are free and open to the public, so visitors are free to come and go as they wish.
