As a native of Northeastern Minnesota’s Iron Range, I was fortunate growing up around friends and family that had ATVs, jet skis, campers, and snowmobiles. Reflecting on those experiences resurrects a lot of delightful memories. For instance, riding through the wilderness on old mining and long-haul logging roads through rolling hills and thick, lush forests alive with an abundance of wildlife and picturesque, serene surroundings.

However, mindful family weekends and vacations were spent on my parent's island on Lake Vermilion, boating became a maniacal, unexplainable obsession for me. Just ask those who are close to me. Not long after I moved here in April of 1992, I was delighted to learn about the boat landing at River View Park and the close, convenient proximity from Eau Claire to Lake Wissota! Jackpot!

Quickly after I settled in Eau Claire, I started saving for a “new to me” boat. I’m currently on my third boat, each time upgrading to a larger boat to take more friends and family. So when it comes to motorsports, I can appreciate the relaxation and distraction from the hustle and bustle of everyday life these pursuits offer. While one can certainly go solo enjoying the lifestyle that powersports offers, there’s nothing quite like the communal spirit of “getting out there” with family and friends while exploring the bounty of many beautiful landscapes and waterways our region offers. That’s why I’m thrilled about this issue’s inaugural “Wisco Motorsports” special section that discusses and examines the cultural impact power motorsports have in the Chippewa Valley. See you out there!
