STAFF NOTE: One Person’s Trash Could Be Your Treasure

from local store director Lindsey Quinnies

From vintage shops to secondhand stores to rummage sales, the thrill of the thrift cannot be beaten. When you find that thing, that one thing, that was unbelievably abandoned by another soul and ended up obtainable – it feels GOOD. Like you’ve won. Like you’ve bested everyone else rummaging around you and made out with the ultimate accolade. This sentiment probably stems from the work it takes to find the real treasures buried between, underneath, or within irrelevance and coming out victorious. And around these parts (the Midwest, I mean), where scoring a deal is a recognized accomplishment, sharing the news of your triumph is obligatory.

It’s exactly that victorious, thrilling wave that I’ve been riding for the past three years after scoring an unimaginable thrift-ory (thrift + victory) with the purple windbreaker you see pictured here. Not only do I get to bask in a steady stream of admirers, but also being able to answer “Where did you get that?!” with “Thrifting at Savers, for $8” is so, so satisfying. Because I found it and I found it first. And it was cheap. And I win. At least in the world of 80’s ski-style purple windbreakers. And some days, that’s good enough. So get out there – hit up those rummage sales, vintage shops, secondhand stores, and find your thrift-ory. I promise it will feel GOOD. Also, check out our Vintage Wares section on page 36 to find your own treasures.
