“Arlo on the Way to the Cemetery” by Sam Peskie

Sam Peskie is making friends with the possum she met in the streets of Minneapolis.

“Arlo on the Way to the Cemetery” (2022) • Digital Illustration   From the artist: “As an illustrator, a prevalent goal of my work is to create a space where viewers feel like they can sit down and rest awhile- one way to do that is by crafting relatable, emotional, real characters. A couple years ago, it was a soppy spring afternoon after a long winter, and I had been out for a walk, enjoying the way that the air was lighter and sun was brighter. Arlo is based on a real person I encountered that day who was on his way to the cemetery to play a song for his grandpa- an incredibly tender thing to do (yes, he was really on a skateboard, but in real life he also had a harmonica).”

Volume One finds its cover art in a number of ways, from local art shows to random emails to knowing someone who knows someone who knows a great artist. The art always originates from a current or former Chippewa Valley resident. If you'd like to submit cover art, send us a message.
