Eau Claire getting more electric?

Michelle Enger

Green initiative continues to go underway at city hall. Last November, Eau Claire City Council budgeted $45,000 for an electric car and charging station. It has yet to be bought and now estimates put the project at least $2,500 over budget.

The city plans for city staff to use the electric car instead of their personal vehicle. Reimbursements are given to some staff members for work-related travel. An electric car would reduce the use of fossil fuels by allowing those workers to use the vehicle.

Last month the city council unanimously voted to accept an invitation into a state Department of Natural Resources program. The program supports sustainability efforts that go beyond the state’s regular requirements.

The Green Tier program has a list of suggested projects, none being required. Buying an electric car is not on the list of suggested projects; however, the program encourages innovation for sustainability and an electric car would benefit the environment.
